    Dr. Barbara Simons speaks on Election Security Developments Since October, 2016 & Elections as a National Defense Issue. Dr. Barbara Simons is the President and on the Board of Directors of Verified Voting – http://www.verifiedvoting.org. She is a former President of the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM), the nation’s largest educational and scientific computing society. She is the only woman to have received the Distinguished Engineering Alumni Award from the College of Engineering of U.C. Berkeley, where she earned her Ph.D. in computer science. A fellow of ACM and of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, she also received the Computing Research Association Distinguished Service Award and the Electronic Frontier Foundation Pioneer Award. An expert on electronic voting, she published Broken Ballots: Will Your Vote Count?, a book on voting machines co-authored with Douglas Jones. She has been on the Board of Advisors of the U.S. Election Assistance Commission since 2008, and she co-authored the report that led to the cancellation of Department of Defense’s Internet voting project (SERVE) in 2004 because of security concerns.     Dr. David Jefferson, Board Chair, Verified Voting, is a computer scientist who has worked at the intersection of public elections, computers, the Internet for over 20 years. He is on the boards of Verified Voting and the California Voter Foundation, and has served as an advisor to the last five California Secretaries of State. In 2004 he was coauthor of a strong critique of the SERVE Internet voting system proposed by the Department of Defense, leading to the program’s cancellation. He is frequently quoted on election security in the press, including an interview on CBS “60 Minutes”. He works at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory where he does research in supercomputing and cybersecurity.
